Get a pool of money
Surely we can get a pool of money from a pool tournament? At our last fundraiser, our hosts had graciously allowed us to play a round of pool after the event. At the time, I had joked that we could raise money by hosting a pool event at their house. Perhaps we can expand the idea and host a pool tournament at a pool house in Arlington. There are a couple aspects to consider. 1) how to raise money. a) Would the idea be to charge players for a game of pool? If so, would they have to pay again if they advanced to the next round? b) Would the idea be to try to get the pool hall to chip in by offering free use of equipment or a percentage of sales? c) would the idea be to try to get additional folks there to pledge money or get sponsors? 2) how to structure it. How many rounds would we ideally want to have? Would it be a one-day/evening thing? 3) who to involve. Should we let anyone play or should we keep it company/organization-centric? If you let anyone play, you could potentially have a lot of contestants. 4) is there a need to make it more interesting and interactive to get more folks to attend who wouldn’t want to play? Pool can be a dry event to watch. Can we have folks try to distract players as part of a rouse?
This idea is worth fleshing out. If we can get a pool hall to agree to host the event in off-peak hours, it could be a win-win for both sides. We’ll be able to raise money and the hall will undoubtedly get a boost in sales from alcohol and food.
