Ideally, it would be periodically so that laborers could have a steady (albeit quarterly/monthly/weekly) source of income. In order to have it periodically, obviously we'd have to have a steady source of labor and materials.

I would suggest starting off with a more short-term project,- gathering up a small to medium stock of items over a few months and taking those items to a market to see how they fare. Depending on the number of sales, we could abandon, adjust, or maintain the project. If sales were good, we could increase labor/materials and/or the frequency that we visit such markets. The converse would hold.

Regardless of the event that is done, I think that to increasingly identify/define the strip of land between SFMR and Arlington Mill Drive as a point for centralized social services, of which SEEC is one, would be beneficial, so partnering with other groups in the area would be positive. Within that, if we could link the upscale developments (residents and/or management of the IO Piazza, Shirlington Crest at Nauck, FRIT, the Hilton Garden Inn that is being built) to the social service needs to create a support base, it would help in the long run).
Another piece of the puzzle is 6) someone (s) to trawl craig's list for the items. And how would the type of items to be sought be established? We don't want to get things that can either be turned around as is or after repair that then do NOT sell. Or would they be automatically recycled through the day laborers or the list? Nauck has started a flea market, but the Day laborer's (and pavilion) can be a contentious item in the neighborhood...Portia may have some thoughts about sharing space at the flea market that is presently underway.
Yes, many shops already sell such items at their 'outlet' stores, or at discounts; larger stores also seem to have tapped into the ability to donate, and obtain financial incentives- but that is probably at the corporate (centralized) level. I think that we would have a better chance if we approached the local stores (of chains), and smaller stores. A list of socially responsive stores-and their ranking- probably exists, and would help us narrow down an approach. M

Interesting idea- are you thinking of periodically, or as a long term endeavor? You know, are there candidates among the day laborers that have the qualities that will enable them to take this on as a long term means of making money (for themselves) If so, this could become a business venture pilot. M
